I'm A Man Now

Under the bright lights of the clothing store, the young man stood stiffly in the aisle, his outfit drawing curious glances from passing shoppers. The pink-and-white check dress brushed against his knees, its ruffle trim swaying slightly as he shifted his weight. White nylon knee-high socks and shiny pink Mary Janes completed the look, a stark contrast to the jeans and T-shirts he had worn his entire life. His face, however, was not timid or embarrassed—it burned with frustration.

“I’m eighteen, Mom,” he snapped, his voice louder than he intended, though he didn’t try to lower it. “I’m a man now. I can decide what I wear.” His hands clenched at his sides, the soft fabric of the dress bunching in his grip. “I don’t want to dress like everyone else anymore. I don’t want jeans. I don’t want T-shirts. This is what I chose.” The words came out fast, years of quiet compliance suddenly breaking loose in one breath.

His mother stared at him, stunned into silence. She had never seen him like this—so certain, so unyielding. The boy who used to shrug and say “whatever you think” was gone, replaced by someone standing tall despite the attention, despite her confusion. For a moment, she opened her mouth to argue, then stopped. Something in his expression—firm, almost defiant—made her hesitate. She realized she wasn’t just looking at her son anymore, but at someone who had decided, finally and completely, to define himself.
